Covid-19 Update

Update: 22nd July 2021

Following the relaxation of government rules from 19th July, we have changed some of the way we are working. However, due to the high number of Covid-19 cases still occuring, we will still have some restrictions and recommendations in place:

  • We are still operating a separate entrance area via our front gates and an exit-only at the front of the main shop, but you will usually be able to walk straight in.
  • Our staff are still wearing masks in all enclosed areas, and we recommend that you do too.
  • We are continuing to provide hand sanitiser to use before entering.
  • It may be necessary to limit numbers, particularly in the livestock areas, during busy times such as at weekends.
  • Update: June 2021

Due to the delay in ending government lockdown rules, we will still be operating with restrictions including the requirement to wear a mask, social distancing, and a queueing system to control numbers at busy times - please join the appropriate marked queue for the section you require, and our staff will fetch you as soon as there is room.

    Update: 18th February 2021

We will be re-opening the shop for customers to enter from Saturday 20th February.

However, as the risk remains high due to Covid variants, we will be taking strict precautions to protect our staff and customers, so please read the points below before visiting to help keep everyone safe and avoid any misunderstandings.

There will be two key changes to the way we operated during the two previous lockdowns:

    • The queueing area will be divided into 3, for the tropical/coldwater rooms, marine room and dry goods only, to try and manage any queues as efficiently as possible.
    • If you are visiting for essentials and would also like to select fish, we are asking that you please limit the time to choose your fish to 15 minutes. We are introducing this measure to limit queue lengths and give everyone a fair chance to visit the livestock areas. It may help to have some advance idea of the fish you would like, and if you wish to discuss this in advance before visiting, please contact us by phone, email or Facebook message and we will be happy to help.

In addition, the following will still apply:

    • We are limiting the number of customers on site at any one time in line with the Government's guidance on social distancing, and we are therefore asking that customers shop alone where possible, and certainly no more than 2 adults shopping together. We would not advise bringing children with you at this time, but if it cannot be avoided, please ensure they are closely supervised at all times.
    • All customers will need to wear a face covering of some sort to enter our buildings, due to the increased risk in the enclosed humid livestock areas. If you do not wish to wear a face covering, or are unable to for any reason, we are happy to provide a service to fetch items for you and bring them to you outside or to your vehicle.
    • We will be providing hand sanitiser at the entrance area, so please use this before entering if you don't have your own.
    • We have created separate entrances and exits to our shop, so that it's easier to keep a safe distance from other shoppers. The usual entry to the shop will be an exit only, and entry will be via our front gates, where there are barriers in place to manage any queues that may occur.
    • We have placed signage throughout the premises to ensure customers keep two metres apart when queuing into or through the shop and reminding customers of the two-metre social distancing rule while you are in store.
    • One-way systems are in place in our livestock areas. Once we have the maximum number of customers in each area of the shop, it will become a one-in one-out system.
    • A member of staff will ask you which area of the store you wish to visit and accompany you to that area as soon as there is space to do so.
    • The upstairs area of the shop will remain closed for the time being, except for accompanied visits to our tank showroom area, available by request.
    • Please note that there are no toilet facilities available for use onsite.
    • We will operate with just one till open in the main shop.
    • We are encouraging our customers to shop in a cashless and contactless way where possible to prevent unnecessary contact.
    • Although we love dogs at Wharf and are usually happy for well-behaved dogs to be brought in, unfortunately in the current circumstances it is not practical in the enclosed indoor spaces.
    • We understand that the above measures are not ideal and may cause queueing at busy times, so we appreciate your understanding that these measures are necessary to minimise risk to you, our customers, and also to our staff, some of whom have vulnerable family members in their household.
    • We are open for our normal hours at this time and will update our website and social media if it becomes necessary to change this.
    • For those who cannot visit the store at this time, we do have a large number (over 2,000 items) of our dry goods available via our newly revamped online shop.

    Update: 7th January 2021

Due to the surging number of Covid-19 cases and concerns about the more infectious variants, we have taken the decision to close our livestock areas and operate from a counter at the front of the main shop only from Friday 8th January, to make it safer for both customers and our staff. This means that it will not be possible to browse the livestock or dry goods areas, but we will fetch any items you require to the counter. We will remain open for our normal hours until further notice.

    Update: 5th January 2021

Following the announcement of a new national lockdown, we would like to reassure our customers that we will remain open due to our status as an essential service for pet food and equipment. However, we will be operating with restrictions following government guidelines, and to minimise the safety risk to our customers and staff:

    • We are limiting the number of customers on site at any one time in line with the Government's guidance on social distancing, and we are therefore asking that customers shop alone where possible, and certainly no more than 2 adults shopping together. Update: 30th December 2020

Following the latest government announcement, we are now in tier 4 restrictions from Thursday 31st December. Due to our status as an essential service for pet food and equipment, we will remain open for essentials with normal opening hours.

    Update: 28th December 2020

As we are currently in tier 3 restrictions, and given the spread of the potentially more infectious variant of Covid-19, we will be maintaining our current safety precautions that are in place following government guidelines and with specific regard to social-distancing and the wearing of face masks. Please note that it is not safe to enter the enclosed, humid areas of our livestock areas without a face covering. If you prefer not to wear a face covering or are unable to for any reason, we will offer to fetch items for you from these areas. Other than these safety restrictions we will remain open as normal.

    Update: 2nd November 2020

Following the announcement of a new national lockdown, we would like to reassure our customers that we will remain open as normal due to our status as an essential service for pet food and equipment (with the usual restrictions in place with regard to social-distancing and the wearing of face masks). If it becomes necessary to make any changes to our opening hours or the way we are operating, we will update everyone again as soon as possible.

    Update: 30th October 2020

Please note that despite the changing situation with different tier levels of COVID-19 restrictions, we are open as normal (with the usual restrictions in place with regard to social-distancing and the wearing of face masks). In addition, despite our "NG" post code, we are actually in Derbyshire, under a Derbyshire district council, and hence not currently in the highest tier restrictions.

    Update: 29th September 2020

Please note that we will be returning to opening on Sundays from this weekend, so we will be open 7 days per week from Sunday 4th October. All social-distancing measures and Government policies such as the requirement for wearing a face covering will remain in place. Please see below for further details.

    Update: 23rd July 2020

Please note that from Friday 24th July, you will need to wear a mask or face covering of some sort to enter our store, in line with the latest Government policy.

    Update: 26th June 2020

We are pleased to announce that we will be re-opening most of our store for customers to enter, from Monday 29th June, with social-distancing measures in place in line with Government guidelines.

We will be operating in a way which is as secure as possible to keep both our customers and our staff members safe, so please read the guidelines below carefully before visiting.

In order to facilitate our reopening, we will be putting the following measures into place:

    • We are limiting the number of customers on site at any one time in line with the Government's guidance on social distancing. We are also asking that no more than 2 members of the same household shop together, which means no children unless it is one child and one adult. We realise this may be inconvenient for some, but with the layout of our store we cannot safely accommodate large family groups in the current circumstances, so we are grateful for our customers' understanding during this time.
    • We will be providing hand sanitiser at the entrance area, so please use this before entering if you don't have your own.
    • We would appreciate customers wearing face masks when visiting the shop if possible.
    • We have created separate entrances and exits to our shop, so that it's easier to keep a safe distance from other shoppers. The usual entry to the shop will be an exit only, and entry will be via our front gates, where the queue will be split depending on whether you want dry goods only or wish to visit our livestock areas. Our staff will help to manage queues.
    • We have placed signage throughout the premises to ensure customers keep two metres apart when queuing into or through the shop and reminding customers of the two-metre social distancing rule while you are in store (please note that even if this requirement is relaxed by the government, we will be keeping it in place in the enclosed areas of our store for the time being).
    • We will remain closed on Sundays for the time being. Our other opening times will remain as normal (9am — 5.30pm), and any changes to these will be published on our website and social media.
    • We understand that the above measures are not ideal and may cause queueing at busy times, so we appreciate your understanding that these measures are necessary to minimise risk to you, our customers, and also to our staff, some of whom have vulnerable family members in their household.

    Update: 12th May 2020

Following the slightly confusing announcements from government this week, we would like to confirm that we are still operating a restricted service with a trade-counter type setup at the front of the store, but the shop is not open for browsing. This is safer both for our customers, and our staff and their families. We expect this system to stay in place for the time being, and we are currently working towards re-opening for browsing by the end of June.

    26th March 2020

We hope you are all safe and well in these very difficult times.

Following the Government announcement on Monday 23rd March that "all non-essential shops must close", we would like to update you all on the situation.

As a pet shop, we are on the list of shops which can remain open, so that we can supply the essentials for keeping your pets healthy, like food, medications and essential items of equipment.

However, we need to do this in a responsible way. For this reason our livestock areas will be closed to browsing, but you will still be able to visit us to collect essentials from the dry goods area of the shop, including reptile foods.

We are now operating a temporary counter at the front of the shop, where we will ask you what you need and fetch it for you.

We are taking extra precautions including a regular cleaning schedule throughout the day, targeting all high-contact areas, as well as following the sensible government advice such as extra hand-washing, etc.

We will only be open 5 days per week, and will be CLOSED on Wednesday and Sunday from 25th March until further notice.

We will have a much reduced number of staff onsite during this time, who will have to devote much of their time to feeding and maintaining our livestock, so please bear with us if we are a little slower to answer emails and social media enquiries, we will try to get back to you as quickly as possible.

We are no longer performing water tests at this time.

If you do visit our premises, please observe the social-distancing space of 2m (6.5ft) to help protect yourself and others.

For those who cannot visit the store at this time, we do have a large number (over 2,000 items) of our dry goods available via the website. If you wish to order dry goods items which are not on the website, then the best way to contact us is by email or Facebook initially so that we can sort the order details before taking payment.

Unfortunately we cannot ship livestock currently, as the courier has temporarily suspended all livestock deliveries due to strain on the courier network.

    Thank you and stay healthy!
